The Forest County Historical Society has set education as a priority in serving our Forest County community. For the fifth year in a row, we are going to offer our lecture series on Tuesday evenings throughout this summer. We ask presenters to share a little knowledge about anything that has to do with Forest County. Speakers talk from 7:00-7:30 and stay around until 8:00 if anyone has any questions. The cost of the programs is always free to members while guests are asked for five dollars each.

June 4- Terry Janosik – “Stemwinders in The Big Woods.” Stemwinder is a term for geared steam locomotives. Geared locomotives were an innovation that enabled lumber men to log the rugged terrain of Northern Pa. during the lumber boom from the 1880’s to the 1920’s. We will look at the history of the three main manufacturers of geared locomotives, Shay, Climax and Heisler. Two of these were built in Northwestern Pa. Lots of photos. Rail fans will enjoy this.
